Hello, I have just upgraded to Firefox 31, and have noticed that when a popup window is created, the window is very small (same size as the menubar) and it cannot be resized.

Is this a bug? Firefox 30 does not do this.

Firefox never pop-up anything, check for malware

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

No, no, no. This has nothing to do with malware or adware. Please strike that thought from this conversation.

I use Firefox with a web-based mailbox program. When composing a new email, a new popup window is opened. Firefox 31 now creates a tiny popup window that cannot be resized.

I had to downgrade to Firefox 30, because Firefox is now useless to me.

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

For Firefox 29.0 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox"Button reset. Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Thank you.

I am encountering the exact same problem with the Firefox 31 upgrade. When I try to create a new ticket in SmarterTrack Enterprise the popup window is shrunk and will not resize/maximize.

Just to verify I created a blank profile and the problem still exists.

I have reverted back to Firefox 30 so I can continue working.

I am running Windows 8.1 Update 1 Enterprise.

TO FIREFOX DEVELOPERS: You need to pay attention to and fix this issue. Smartermail webmail works fine in Firefox 30, IE, Chrome. Opera, Safari, etc. ... but NOT in Firefox 31 ... so, to me, that makes it your problem to fix and you need to embrace it. Thanks, Jim

"Reset Firefox" does not help with this issue. Neither does Firefox Safemode.

The problem exists in a fresh clean install of v31.0 with no add-ons loaded. That's under at least Windows XP, 7, and 8.1. v30.0 does not have this problem.

I can verify that what JBFixit says is correct. I can add that this is a Firefox 31-only issue since IE, Chrome, Opera all Safari do not have the problem.

For those of you whose problem is with SmarterMail, my e-mail provider thinks they have a solution, although it has not yet been implemented.

I quote from Hostgator tech support: "I have found a Smartermail update that was released on 7/24/14 that fixed this issue (http://www.smartertools.com/smartermail/releasenotes/v11.aspx - Version 11.7.5318 (2014-07-24))."

The patch won't be loaded to their servers until at least tonight. I'll post again if it is successful.

I suspect that this is a workaround on Plesk's part (developer of SmarterMail) for a Firefox bug, but I'll take anything that fixes the webmail system.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache

Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

and

  • Remove Cookies

Warning ! ! This will log you out of all sites you're logged in to. Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Privacy. Under History, select Firefox will Use Custom Settings. There is a button on the right side called Show Cookies.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

The following SmarterMail patch (link is to release notes) solves this issue for those running SmarterMail. I don't know if that includes you.

http://www.smartertools.com/smartermail/releasenotes/v11.aspx - Version 11.7.5318 (2014-07-24)

The patch is applied by the administrators of your mail server. That could be in-house or a paid e-mail hosting provider. In my case it's Hostgator and they applied the patch on Saturday 8/2/2014.

If this solution does not apply to you, or if you have to deal with a delay before the patch can be loaded, jscher2000 gives us a likely workaround in question "Popup windows are small and cannot be resized".

Stromos, I haven't checked on SmarterTrack Enterprise but I believe it also comes from SmarterTools. Check the above website for a patch.

JBFixit, How do I find the "likely workaround" from jscher2000r that you mention? Tx

If you search on the string I gave, using the Mozilla Support search window, the question starting with that string comes up 3rd. Why 3rd? I don't know. I'd expected first.

Here's jscher2000's workaround. I haven't tested it, since my issue's solved, but it sounds like it should work. Hope it helps.

As a temporary workaround, you can block website scripts from resizing windows. It's a bit of a sledgehammer, but another user who has this problem indicated that it does stop the SmarterMail script from rolling up the window.

Here's how:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste dom and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the dom.disable_window_move_resize preference to switch it from false to true.

That is about toggling the dom.disable_window_move_resize pref to true on the about:config page

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
