Autofill does not work properly and the addressing area for a new message doesn't 'look' right.
Auto fill does not work properly when addressing a new (or reply or forwarded) message. For example, a contact, Joe Blow, is in my Address Book. His address is joe@blow.com.
It used to be - for as long as Thunderbird would autofill addresses - I could type in "jo", and it would show all contacts starting with jo. If there was only one, I could just hit return and it would place joe blow <joe@blow.com> on the addressing line. Now if I hit return after entering jo, it enters jo >>Joe Blow<joe@blow.com>, and I have to correct it.
Two more bits: The addressing lines and Subject line used to be white. Now they're the background color unless the mouse curser is over them.
Addresses that autofill are red. They should fill to black as they're in my Address Book.

lets try and pick this off one at a time.
Check the size of the mab files in your profile folder. they really should be quite small given they are text files. Lots of address records fit in 1KB
I had a very similar issue and a look at me address books (somethingt I very rarewly do) showed hundreds of duplicated entries.
So do you have duplicates? Do your have the add-on Google contacts which caused my troubles (I think)
I have several .mab files in my profile... It looks like this,
and the files themselves defy understanding. They are difficult to read or understand, much less find any dups. What does one make of this...
I do not have any google contacts or any other google related add-ons.
Ok I need to change gears, as I have become aware of a bug that I did not know about before, so most of the searching is over.
There is a daily build of Thunderbird which you can text to see if the bug is your problem. It can be downloaded here http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-comm-central/thunderbird-34.0a1.en-US.win32.installer.exe and installs as Daily not Thunderbird.
As it is a development build, back up your profile first, just in case (I am running it with no issues)
The developers are looking for feedback to see if the fix really is a fix, so your observations are valuable.
I'm not familiar with daily builds, and hesitate to load/run something I rely on that isn't ready for prime time. Does it load on top of TB or separate from it? Am I correct to assume it uses the same profile? I just went through more than a week of a problem with ver 31.0 and working finally got it working. I don't want to have to jump through hoops with it again.
