How do I save email addresses from in box without manual entry?

Any other email program I've used will recognize an email address when you type in a letter or two in the TO box. It seems Thunderbird only looks at the address book that has to be manually input. Doesn't seem to be an option to remember an address from your inbox. I have to be missing something. Manual entry into the contact list can't be the only option...right?

Thunderbird adds outbound addresses to your Collected address book. Would you really want every address that you received an email from clogging up your address book? Junk mail and all? When you are viewing an email in the message pane or a tab there is a star to the right of the addresses. If the star is filled with color that address is in one of your address books. If the star is empty you can click it to add the contact to the Personal address book. Clicking a filled star will open the contact edit dialog box to add more details or move to another book. This is NOT the same star to the left of the message headers.
