If I try to download mail, it asks for a password and if I put in my password it states: application specific password required.

I tried accessing my pc e-mail account from my android phone because the one I specially created for my phone would not accept the password (I had to update some apps and chrome and needed an e-mail account to do that)and since then I cannot access the same e-mail account on my pc. It keeps saying:"sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: Application-specific password required: http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?answer=185833"

Go to gmail and create the application specific password they are requiring these days. It is a Google thing.

The link you supplied explained it. Just follow their instructions.
