Three ways: 1. Middle-click the link 2. { Ctrl + click } the link 3. Right-click the link and use Open Link in New Tab

Avoid going back on pages like that. Don't leave the original web page - but rather open links from that page in a new tab. Then when you are finished reading the new tab, close it and original page will be where you left it.

What I am wondering why many times it does open back to the same spot?

Sometimes a web page is updated, meaning the page you saw before is no more. Using the method above will keep the current page available.
