Several attempts to move all of my Eudora folders to Thunderbird mail failed miserably: I can move only a few of them. There are numerous suggestions from some users but I am not sure which one to follow not to create a mess.

Perhaps you need to try them all. Failure can be reversed by deleting the profile and starting again, so the import would best occur before you start getting mail in the profile..
