the old story: disk crash and no backup ! I need to recover my bookmarks from the crashed disk. The only way the pc can be started is 'safe mode with DOS command'. So I would actually be able to recover certain files or directories via dos commands. Does anybody know, what the exact file name is, where all the bookmarks are and in which Directory Firefox normally stores them? thanks for any help

I think the best way to recover your bookmarks is to create a folder in document on computer call it FF Bookmarks. Then go to bookmarks select all bookmarks here you find import and export backup dropdown list select export bookmarks to HTML save it in folder created.

Next time you want to recover you follow same procedure and restore by import bookmarks from HTML.

User data, like bookmarks, is stored in the Profile folder located in this folder path with Windows Vista up thru Win 8.1 . C:\Users\<Windows login user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>\

Problem with copying thru "DOS" is that the Profile is given a random "salt" name - an 8 character alpha / numeric name - IOW, there is no "exact" folder name, it is automatically generated to be unique for each installation / Profile.

See this for information about recovering your bookmarks file. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile#w_bookmarks-downloads-and-browsing-history

What are you going to do with that crashed hard drive?

Replace it?

Or, format it for re-installation of Windows and your programs?

The above bookmarks, recovery is my way, after losing mine so many times. I'm not a computer technician, but someone who try to help myself.

Yeah, may work for you, but the "Owner" can't get Windows to launch much less Firefox to do what you suggested.

"The only way the pc can be started is 'safe mode with DOS command'."

Drifting off thread here, but in response to inspiration's reply: That's exactly what I do, but with one crucial difference - keep a flash drive plugged in, and copy your bookmarks to that as well, so even if the computer totally dies you still won't lose them.
