Even though I have all of the right boxes checked both on the server and in account settings in TB, emails older than about 2 weeks are permanently deleted from my trash folder. How can I stop this happening?

Is this an IMAP account ?

Some servers auto empty the Trash folder. After selecting to delete an email, it is expected that you really did want to delete the email, so they give a period of limited time allowing you to undelete if deleted in error. Otherwise they auto empty to free up space, after all you would not delete or not undelete if you wanted to keep the email.

for example: Gmail says it auto empties every 30 days. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401?hl=en

You do not say whether you use gmail, but it is likely you are using a server that does something similar.

Bottom line is do not use the Trash folder as a storage for emails you want to keep.
