How can I get rid of the "A with a hat"s that Thundebird keeps inserting in my emails?

Especially when I file, reply, or forward an email, Thunderbird inserts an "A with a hat" (and sometimes more than one) after most (but not all) of the punctuation marks. How can I get rid of these, and preferably keep them from being generated in the first place?
