I have install the new version 41.0.1 of Firefox, considered as a security update and it have installed new functionnality.

One of them is a problem for me : the "New tab" functionnality. Because it doesn't take the option browser.newtab.url to display my personnal url when I open a new tab, which is super-useful for me.

So, why on your "New tab controls", don't you have display the option of a personnal url ? Or why do you have disabled the browser.newtab.url option without a message ?

Thanks to remake this basic option of all modern web-browser.

Hi, from Firefox 41, you need to use the add-on New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement), to make changes to the New Tab page.

Once installed, open the Add-ons Manager (Cmd+Shift+A) > Extensions, then look for New Tab Override and click on Options to set your preference.

Note, if you only want the New Tab to be the same as your Home page, you can use the add-on New Tab Homepage instead.

You may then need to restart Firefox for any changes to take effect.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

Hello free.r, yes you are correct, the browser.newtab.url being removed due to abuse by malware in 41.x version.

the only way to do that (to set a personal url) is to use the next add-on :

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

thank you

EDIT: Scribe is faster than me :-)

Other alternatives:

You can look at this extension to use the home page:

Classic Theme Restorer includes this feature as well. In CTR version 1.3.9 you can find the "New tab page url" in the Tabs (1) window.

You can use these special pages for the new tab page or use the URL of a web page.

  • the default new tab page with the tiles is about:newtab
  • the default home page is about:home
  • for a blank page you can use about:blank
