The File |Edit | View | Go | Message | Events and Tasks | Tools | Help text in the tab bar are either gray or white. How do I get them to be black like the other control bars?

What are you using as theme? The default theme in win 7, Tbird 38.3.0, looks like this

That's what it looked like in Win 7, but it changed when I upgraded to Win 10. I am currently using Tbird 38.3.0. Unlike your sample, my white File |Edit | View | Go | Message | Events and Tasks | Tools | Help text is BELOW the tab and not above it. Not sure why; don't really care. How do I change the theme back to the default?

The default theme didn't fix it. I had to find a theme with a dark background, like Earth-Moon.
