Why do I suddenly (release 38.3) have html issues? Checked all settings per forum. Everything sends/rcv's in plain text.

Recently, I believe with release 38.0, folks I email are telling me my emails are arriving in plain text and just place holders for images. I seem to be receiving most of my emails in plain text too. Seems like html left my Thunderbird. Some emails will go correctly if, during composition, when in the body of the email I choose "Delivery Format" in the options menu and change from "Auto-Detect" to "Rich text (HTML) only". I've downgraded to older versions of Thunderbird to no avail.

Right click the account in the folder pane, select settings. In the account settings under Composition and addressing is Compose in HTML selected?

Yes, the box is checked to compose in html. I've unchecked and rechecked this box and restarted Thunderbird. Have also checked all the settings in tools/options/composition and advanced trying " Send the message in both plain test and HTML" etc. etc. etc. Checked every setting I could find mentioned in the forums and in Google. I'm wondering if it's a Windows XP problem.

I do not know about XP these days. But legacy really does come to mind. However, have you checks the view menu (alt+V) for message body as > original HTML.

Have you tried just sending in HTML. There are not many that only read text these days.

Yes and Yes. Yes, set to original HTML and Yes, have changed settings in multiple areas to HTML only.

In tools> options> composition> send options I've placed *.* in the HTML domains box and "send the message in both plain text and HTML" in the "text format" drop down box. If that doesn't help I'll change from "send the message in both plain text and HTML" to "Send the message in HTML anyway".

The other thing I may try is to create a HTML email signature using white text so it won't show. I've read that Thunderbird could be a little stubborn about using HTML unless there's HTML code in the body of the email. This thing is getting to be a real royal pain; enough of one that I may look around for an alternative to T-bird. Any additional suggestions will be appreciated.

Hello again, Matt.

There is a mozillaZine knowledgebase article that I read which contains a great deal of information about setting up T-bird. The link is: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_HTML_font_for_new_messages_-_Thunderbird but the article was last updated October 2007 and referenced Thunderbird ver. 1.5. I'm wondering if there is a much newer article that totally explains the set-up for the newer versions.

It might be old, but nothing has really changed. Most of the actual compose code is the same that was inherited from Netscape.

Note on rereading this. There should be nothing in the HTML domains box. Mine is completely blank.

One posibility that has not been covered here is to option in the address book for the recipient "Prefers to receive messages formatted as " this is normally defaulted to Unknown. But it may be some or your contacts have had this reset to plain text somehow.

Check contact using the all address books. That way duplication will become apparent quite early on.
