In the options section I have "Open new window in a new tab instead" however this does not happen. I use Yahoo search and I have to always right click, open in a new tab. How do I fix this?

Middle-click the link or use { Ctrl + click } when opening the link.

The setting in Tools > Options > General: Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window for opening a link. Links that do not specify a target always open in the current tab unless you override that with a middle-click or Ctrl (Mac: Cmd) left-click (new tab) or Shift left-click (new window).
