Why can't bookmarks created in iOS be synced to other platforms?

I realize this is more of a development question than a usage question, but it's driving me crazy. Can somebody explain to me why bookmarks can't be synced from iOS to other platforms? Isn't the entire point of Sync to abstract bookmark format from the target platform? It's just a text link with text metadata, right?

Hi IRCraziestTaxi, I think it has to do with the persistence connection for syncing. But don't quote me there. Check out the work and tracking being done on this feature in bugzilla.mozilla.org. Its out in the open.

We're working on it. Turns out it's a little harder than one would think.
