Thunderbird is only showing English/United States. I have tried downloading the language pack and it claims to have installed but nothing happens and everything is still checked as American spelling! Sorry English/United States!

Did you download the English (British) version of thunderbird ? https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all/

click on 'Write' right click in the content area and select ; languages > add dictionaries

A new tab should open showing addon dictionaries. Language: English (British) click on 'Download Dictionary'. click on 'Add to thunderbird' click on 'Install now'

click on Addon Manager or Menu icon > Addons make sure it is enabled.

Menu icon > Options > Options > composition > 'spelling' tab Language : select 'English/United Kingdom' click on OK

click on 'Write' click on 'Spelling' check the Language is 'English/united Kingdom'
