Even since the Australis theme the bars has taken up an awful lot of space and and i don't like them being put above the address bar either. How can i make them compact and squared as they used to be?

Look thru the UserStyles website: https://userstyles.org/

And iif you don't even want to use Stylish you can copy / paste the code from those UserStyles into a "user" file.

Hi, try this add-on -

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/?src=ss

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

Thanks! There aren't any alternative ways to restore the old tabs without having to install add-ons?
