I've had Thunderbird for years. Today I try to get my emails and Thunderbird won't accept my password. It's great that I can reset the password but not much good if I can't log into my account to get the confirmation email - - help !

Thunderbird has no password. Nor does it have the capacity to reset passwords. The reset option on the web site is to reset the password for this forum.

Repeated requests for a password that has worked for years can have a number of causes. 1. The server is down... Contact your mail provider. 2. Your provider has suspented your account or detected suspicious activity. Log into web mail and if you see nothing contact your mail provider. 3. Your anti virus has lost the plot and is not allowing connections, or an add-on has suffered a bad update (not all that likely)

For Item three;

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
