Hi - I can't see facebook like and share buttons in firefox, so I start in safe mode and I can see them - but how can I now get new tabs to open with google?

Hi. I can only use safe mode if I want to see facebook like and share buttons (and the tweet button) - which I need. Can't find any other way to see them. But I want google when I open a new tab - but it seems that I need an add-on? But I don't think I can have add-ons in safe mode. I'm not a techie - so any help on what safe mode actually means, how I can see fb buttons without safe mode, or how to get add-ons or get google to open in a new tab with safe mode - very welcome. Thanks.

Hi, Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode only, and shouldn't be used for every-day browsing. It does a few things, but in your case the likely relevant one is that it temporarily disables add-ons.

Incompatibility with one (or more) of your add-ons or a theme if you have one, is probably causing the missing buttons.

To find the culprit, exit Safe Mode, then disable your add-ons/theme one by one until the buttons come back; note that for some add-ons you will need to restart Firefox after disabling them; Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A) > Extensions/Appearance.

Re your New Tab question; for security reasons, from Firefox 41, you need to use an add-on to make changes to the New Tab page.

You can try New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement). Once installed, open the Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A) > Extensions, then look for New Tab Override and click on Options to set your preference.

An alternative is Custom New Tab

Note, if you only want the New Tab to be the same as your home page, you can use the add-on New Tab Homepage instead.

You may need to restart Firefox for any changes to take effect.

On that troubleshooting link, the first thing it suggested was to click a refresh firefox button. It worked - I can now see the social media buttons. Thank you so much. I'll go for the second part now. Thanks again,
