Sometimes I know an email should be coming through, and even though I click on check messages, nothing shows up. Then hours later, they will suddenly appear. I have charter email & the emails are visible in the charter website. If I close and restart thunderbird on my PC the messages show up. But I would rather not have to do this all the time and sometimes miss important notices because they show up hours late. Is anyone else having this problem?

This is a known problem with the Charter IMAP server, and many people have complained about it here. Whatever Charter tell you, you'll have to complain to them, and urge them to fix their server. Also see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1145471
