In configuration instructions, a choice comes up as "gandi.net" for $.99. Unlike all the others, that specify an amount PER YEAR. What does this mean? Does it mean that [username]@gandi.net will be my new email address -- for a one time charge of $.99? Any other selection I make defines the email address as "Contact@xxx.net for a variously defined amount per year. This is all too confusing. Help?

Do you already have a working email address? If so why purchase one from ghandi? They are a 3rd party vendor with a business agreement with Thunderbird to try and sell email addresses to the unsuspecting Thunderbird user. There are lots of free providers like gmail, gmx and yahoo. If you have an existing address select use existing instead of use new address.

Yes, But... My current email address is being terminated in a few weeks. I have obtained an updated Google account and password with an approved email address, but I need to add it to my existing Thunderbird account, so I can migrate all of my contacts and email archives , and messages first. When I try to add the new account to the old, I keep gettimg unsatisfactory email names that are "Contact@ ..." with annual costs involved. I don't know how to accomplish my objective when the "add new account configuration" proceduregives me unacceptible choices.

Do not select NEW mail account. Select EXISTING mail account.

I don't have a Thunderbird "EXISTING" account option. Your answers are too cryptic and I don't follow what you are trying to tell me. My existing account is not a gmail account, It is supported by a 3rd Party ISP server under a unique domain name. If I put a new email address on my existing account, it will also be terminated (because that server will be deleted) when that ISP goes out of business in a few weeks. Also that ISP has totally corrupted my Thunderbird operation and deleted a number of functionalities (like a SPAM folder). I may also need to do a clean Install of Thunderbird to get up and running, but I am not sure how without deleting all of my contacts, settings, and existing message files.

Maybe someone else will help you. My instructions are pretty clear.

Stop selecting New Email account. How is that cryptic. If you already have an established email account, whether or not it has been added to Thunderbird, it is existing.

Airmail is correct - according to the above you have one or more gmail accounts. When the thunderbird account dialog comes up "Would you like a new address?" you should click "skip this and use my existing email".
