There have been issues reported with Firefox 55.0 that need some investigation. There is a Firefox 55.0.1 release to address a few of these issues, but I do not know if this update is offered to Firefox 54 users since there are still issues that aren't covered by this update. Best is probably to wait at least a week before updating manually to see if updated are enabled in the meantime. Automatic updates are usually offered only to a limited group of users.
