It's as if my keyboard has been remapped. When I hit a key some other character appears. Also, some but not all, of my old incoming e-mails now show this anomaly when they're displayed on the screen. As a result I cannot send e-mails and I cannot read some incoming e-mails.

Does it also happen in Thunderbird’s Safe Mode? If not, make sure all installed add-ons (including themes) are up to date and still compatible with Thunderbird 52 according to the reviews and info on addons.mozilla.org, if obtained from there.

As it turned out, I had set the font to an obsolete Adobe MultipleMaster font, and when I changed to a non-MultipleMaster font the problem went away.
