That sounds like the Message Pane displaying the Thunderbird start page. When you single click a message it displays there if you have it turned on. Pressing F8 toggles the Message Pane on and off. You have to double click a message to have it open in a new tab or window.

That sounds like the Message Pane displaying the Thunderbird start page. When you single click a message it displays there if you have it turned on. Pressing F8 toggles the Message Pane on and off. You have to double click a message to have it open in a new tab or window.
