Why does my bookmarks tab keep disapearing from the top of my page? It's very annoying when I cannot restore it to the top!

When I first downloaded Firefox, the bookmark tab was at the top of that start page and stayed there. Now, it has disappeared and when I can get it back, it only appears as an open column on the right or left side of the page. What must I do to keep it at the top?

In Firefox speak, the bar at the top is the Menu Bar and the panel at the left is the Sidebar. There's also a toolbar button for the Bookmarks menu.

(1) Menu Bar

You can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.
  • in Customize mode > Show/Hide Toolbars (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

To turn on the Menu Bar or Bookmarks Toolbar, click it on the list.

(2) Toolbar button

The new bookmarks menu button () should work the same way as the old bookmarks menu button (), which was the "right-half" of the inseparable star+book duo.

To add that button, either:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  • Click the "Library" button:
  • Click "Bookmarks"
  • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
  • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
