Getting gmail ghost message repeatedly

On 2/2 at 6:17 a.m. I received an email message from techsoup.org to each of two accounts at verizon.net. Since then Thunderbird downloads the same message from my gmail account (but with a 6:17 a.m. timestamp), and downloads it every time I 'Get Messages' using a POP3 connection. So far that's 20 times. I delete the message but it doesn't stop it from coming in again as 'new' the next time. I checked the gmail account at Google and the message is not there.

I do receive techsoup emails on all three accounts but this one has, apparently, not been sent to the gmail account because it is not there now.

What's happening?

Thanks - Chuck

Edit - the timestamp on the verizon emails is 6:14, not 6:17.
