How do I stop Thunderbird marking deleted items as read?

Hi, I'm new to Thunderbird but finally switched yesterday. I've noticed that when I delete messages they are marked as read before being transferred to the Deleted folder - even though I haven't read them. This is a bit of a nuisance since I do occasionally make a MISTAKE. Finding accidentally deleted messages is easier if I can separate what's been read from what hasn't been. I can't find any setting that affects this nor has Google provided any answers.

What you are requesting is covered in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=545504 It is something that is unlikely to change, and I do not know of any workarounds.

Ah well :-(. Thanks for pointing me the right direction. Clearly this has been a long running issue.
