Not sure much help I'll be. Only been using T-Bird for a year (with minimal issues and my Ver is 38.5 OLD.

You haven't provided if your issue is receiving or sending? Each option requires a different password setting.

After attempting to correct both options (happened to me one time) and no resolution? The only option is to delete the account in both the receive and send sections, than re-create a new account. (Note there may be additional issues if this account is your DEFAULT account (deleting a DEFAULT account entirely requires renaming another account as DEFAULT).

I am prompted for my password each time I open TB (but not when I send or receive messages).

Most likely that you have a master password set for all email accounts. Part of that procedure required password login each time TB is opened.

Suggest removing master password and set up accounts individually, each with their own password. I've ten email accounts all coming into TB and am never prompted for a password.
