When I do a search and find an e-mail, how do I tell what folder it is in or what folder THAT folder is in?

Thunderbird search finds e-mails quite well. Once the search engine returns the e-mail it also shows the folder in which the e-mail is contained. How can I determine where THAT folder is located?

Which search are you using?

I generally avoid the global search and when I do need to use it, I use the "open email as list" button to display the found messages in the more conventional message list window.

Note you can add "account" and "location" columns to this display.

And now a right-click and "open message in containing folder" switches to the conventional "main" Thunderbird window, with the relevant folder highlighted in the folder pane at the left, and the folder tree showing its provenance.
