Running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 with all updates applied.

Firefox crashed and upon restarting was told Firefox was being updated (61.0.1).

After update Firefox fails to open a window but there are still 7 threads running after trying.

I have uninstalled and deleted folders but full fresh install still fails to open.

Hi, end those Processes that are running. Try to uninstall Firefox. If issues boot to Safe Mode with network support :

now try : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 61.0.2 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Thanks Pkshadow,

Unfortunately after following all the steps it continues just the same.

As further background, as I recall, sometime after I swapped from running 32 to 64bit Win7 Ult, my desktop has had NO lefthand edge to the screen and the mouse has been able to travel out of sight about the equivalent of another screens wide. This has only caused inconvenience and NEVER any other issue that I'm aware of.

With this Firefox problem, when I click on the taskbar icon 'that wispy flash of white movement' that can often be seen preceding a window opening still happens but it goes off to the left hand side off the screen and out of site. Previous efforts to solve the 'phantom' lefthand screen yielded no solution so I gave up.

Maybe this further info gives you more clues? :)

Cheers,

David.

PS. I hate having to use IE11 or Chrome, so unintuitive.

I had already seen the post of the advice you gave me, I had just not done the Disk Clean-up.

Please see if there is any crash reports within the time frame of this happening. Copy/Paste about:crashes to the Address Bar and Enter Include the bp- part if no bp- do not send.

Must be for when crash happened and crash happened that caused this.

I couldn't find any crash reports.

I used my Ashampoo Uninstall 5 tool to clean up, including old Firefox versions (including back to 55!) and was able to successfully install current version.

But, when I replaced Appdata files from backup copy of 61.0.2, new Firefox returned to the problems I'd had of window not opening on screen but running somewhere nor being able to close without using Task Manager.

I then returned Appdata files to the new copies and just updated bookmarks manually. The bookmarks held in new version were somehow over 18months old!!

So, thank you for your efforts but fault appears to have been within Firefox itself which appears to have occurred upon the update being installed. I've been using (regrettably, IE11 & Chrome in the meantime with NO other system issues apparent during that time).

Cheers,

David.
