Adobe Flash Player out of date malware message

When accessing Thunderbird in the mail and newsgroups window, I get a malware ad in the pane just below the email message window where normally the contents of a highlighted email is displayed (see attached image).

The ad says "Adobe Flash Player" is out of date and presents buttons with options to update now or later.

As soon as I click on an email, the content is shown in the pane and the malware ad disappears. It reappears whenever I re-open or start Thunderbird. I am sure it is malware because I inadvertently clicked on it once and it installed a number of programs that promised to "clean" my Mac but are known as shams.

I have tried to search for a way to remove this annoyance from Thunderbird but Googling turns up suggestions on how to remove add-ons from Firefox. I have found nothing for Thunderbird specifically. Can someone help with this?

That isn't the point. You said there is no Flash on that computer, and sure enough, Flash is installed. Get rid of it entirely, then see if you still get the Flash update prompt.

Do you have Flash installed on your computer? If so, which version?

more options

No. I do not. This is not about Flash. It's a scam that installs a bunch of other crap on the computer if you click on OK or install now.

From the looks of this, the Flash plugin should be disabled.

So I removed those files (shockwave flash and futuresplash player), quit and restarted Thunderbird, spam ad still there in the content pane.

I believe that version of Flash got installed when I stupidly clicked on that ad. The malware then installs Flash as well as other programs that infect your Mac or PC.

I think the cause of the problem is described here, generally: https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-adobe-flash-player-is-out-of-date-popup/

The question is, how to remove that message from Thunderbird. I will ignore it so I don't think it can do any harm, but I just want it gone and without having to purchase some other program to remove the adware, which is what I now think this is.

You posted a link to an article above. Did you read the article? Did you follow the instructions to remove the “Adobe Flash Player is out of date” Pop-up Scam as described in the article?
