I am trying to install Thunderbird on a Window 7 Professional desktop and I get a setup error that says "This version of Thunderbird requires Microsoft Window 7 or newer".

Any advice?

Maybe the web browser you are downloading with or the Thunderbird version you currently have is running in Windows XP or Vista compatibility mode.

Could you turn off any compatibility settings on your shortcuts?

  • Right-click a desktop shortcut, then click Properties
  • Right-click a browser or Thunderbird icon pinned to the Taskbar then right-click then click Properties

You should clear all the boxes on the Compatibility tab for best results (giant screenshot below).

I was first using Google Chrome to download the Thunderbird file but it did not have any compatibility settings turned on. So I tried using Firefox to download the file and it installed successfully.

So you have a problem with your installation of Chrome. I suggest you uninstall it and install it again, allowing it to import settings from Firefox to your bookmarks etc remain after the event.
