if I look in the filter log, I see confirmation that the items have repeatedly been deleted, but are not from senders that are set up to be filtered. Help! below copied from filter log

perhaps you could post the actual filter. My guess is it contains some sort of logic error like blocking all mail where the from contains "edu" or "service".

BLocklists become totally unmanageable and it is for this reason Thunderbirdc has no automatic one. It is also a common fallacy that spam can be managed by blocklists. Never going to happen successfully. All folk do is make a job for themselves maintaining something the computer was designed to do, or a simple unsubscribe email or web visit to the address in the email would fix permanently.
