I simply want to remove an IMAP account and all of it's data from Thunderbird on my PC. The email account is still active and used so I want to make sure that removing the account and data will not in any way affect the information on the mail server.

Yes, you can. Just use the account manager to remove the account from Thunderbird. Your data on the server will not be affected.

  1. Go to [=] > Options > Account Settings
  2. Select the account to remove.
  3. In the bottom-left corner, go to Account Actions > Remove Account
