Can not link to a pdf from google search or any website. Click on link and NOTHING happens.

If I click on a link which is a pdf file from a google search, NOTHING happens. If I am on a webpage and wish to link to a pdf file, the screen blanks for a second or two and I am returned to the original web page. I do not have this problem using chrome, and this seems to be a recent problem with firefox
