Have Firefox (72.0.2 64-bit) open with one tab. Have "Restore previous session" box NOT checked (ie. don't restore previous session) in Preferences. Running on Xubuntu 18.04.3 Logout of Xubuntu session, while both Firefox and Thunderbird apps are open. Login again, Start Firefox from desktop icon, Firefox reports having trouble restoring previous session, so I select Start New Session Button, whereupon Firefox starts normally.

Firefox starts properly when closed prior to logout. I was thinking the latest update to 72.0.2 might be the cause, since I have another system running 72.0.1 without issue. So, as a test, I updated the 72.0.1 system to 72.0.2, however it still does not have this issue. So, I have to admit that Firefox does not appear to be the cause. The only other MAJOR difference between the two systems is that the one having problems is a VM running under VirtualBox on my Asustor AS5304T NAS system. I'll have to take this up with them. Thanks for your time.

Firefox may be performing a crash recovery due to either (A) incomplete shutdown, or (B) other software removed the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file created at shutdown.

Logout of Xubuntu session, while both Firefox and Thunderbird apps are open.

-- the OS logout might be killing Firefox or Firefox may be crashing while you are logged out. Can you do a regular quit of both Mozilla apps before you log out of the OS and see whether that resolves the issue.
