How do I prevent thunderbird from mangling signatures?

When I reply to a message that has a traditional "--" separated signature, thunderbird seems to truncate everything below (and including) the --.

A workaround I discovered that partially works is to select the content of the message (Ctrl-A) before replying (Ctrl-Shift-R). This way it will still include the signature, but even then it will put the signature text on the same line as the --. For example, if the message ended with:

-- John

When I reply it will be:

-- John

This forum mangled my question text (must have been written by the people that wrote thunderbird!). The first "-- John" should have a newline, and the second one is what I incorrectly see when replying in thunderbird.

The separator is a standard way to omit the signature from replies: it's expected that the sender doesn't need to see their own signature in your reply to their message.

If the sender doesn't want their signature omitted from replies, they can change a preference.

The problem is that thunderbird truncates everything below the signature in the email I am replying to. There may be an entire chain below that signature (because people at work always top post)

This problem might be avoided if senders, using TB or otherwise, adjusted the setting in Tools/Account Settings, Composition & Addressing, 'and place my signature' to 'below the quote'.

I cannot demand that everyone uses a certain signature format. What I need is for thunderbird to not mangle emails.
