Firefox Updated, Now Opening New Tabs in New Window (Probable Reason: Many Tabs Open)

IMPORTANT NOTE: I already have the Check mark clicked in Settings to "open links in tabs instead of new windows" so please don't suggest that.

I tend to have a lot of tabs open (more than 100) in Firefox. Until it recently updated, no matter how many tabs I had open, if I opened a new tab, it would do so in the same window. Now, after the update, I have about 60 tabs open and anytime I open a new tab from my current window, it will after a few seconds switch to opening a new window, which is very annoying.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi mmmoshen

This could be a problem with an extension as this is not standard behavior.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
