How do I selectively open these links in background tabs?

I am using "browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground" so some links (ones that normally open in new windows) open in tabs in the background instead of immediately getting focus. I am using this functionality for purposes of one specific website. Unfortunately, I do not like this behavior to happen on all websites. I tried turning "browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground" off and then control+clicking and middle clicking on the links, but this is not working to open them in the background. Is there any other way I can turn off "browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground" but selectively open the links I am using in the background? Perhaps there is a button other than 'control' I can hold while clicking or there is an extension?

You can try to hold down the Shift key while middle-click a link with the mouse wheel to see if that works to reverse loading in the background.
