Firefox on Android keeps crashing immediately upon opening

Hello,

I'm using Firefox on Android 11 (the latest Android update available on my phone, Pixel 2XL) and it has suddenly started crashing immediately upon opening the app.

I last updated Firefox to the latest version about a week ago, and it has worked fine since then until the crashes started this afternoon. I hadn't updated any other apps when the crashes began and had made no other changes to the phone or Firefox settings.

I've tried clearing the app cache and restarting the phone several times, but it didn't help.

I know I should try uninstalling and reinstalling, but I just want to be able to retrieve my open tabs before doing so. Unfortunately, when I tried to access them from Firefox on my laptop, they didn't seem to be synced and didn't show up even though I previously had sync enabled.

In the brief moment when the app opens before it crashes, I can see the open tabs are still there, so I imagine it's still stored somewhere.

The Firefox app crashes right when I open it, so I'm not able to enable sync or access the settings. I'm also not able to get the report from about:crashes for the same reason.

Is there any other way I could retrieve the tabs I had open? Alternatively, is the crash issue something that could eventually resolve on its own, or at least with the next Firefox update?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi

What is the version number of Firefox for Android that is installed on your device?

Hello, It is version 97.2.0.

The crash feedback report shows a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError - any way to resolve this error? The memory use on my phone itself is normal (2.2GB out of 3.8GB in the past day).

Hi

if you open the Android Settings app, select Applications and find Firefox for Android in the list. Under storage, clear the cache (not data!) and do the same to other apps on your device that you use often then restart your device.

Does this help?

Unfortunately, I've tried that many times (cleared the app cache for every single one of my apps and restarted the phone) but it did not help :/

If you open the Firefox for Android menu, select Settings, select About Firefox, you should see an option labelled Crashes.

Tap on the word "Socorro" in the most recent report and a web page will open. Please can you long press to copy that pages address and include it in a reply to this thread.

Hello,

My issue is that the Firefox app crashes immediately upon opening (within a split second). As such, I am not able to access the settings within the app.

I am sorry, but it looks like the only way to proceed will be to either clear the app data or uninstall and reinstall Firefox for Android.

Sadly this will clear any bookmarks and user credentials that have not been saved it synced to another copy of Firefox.
