I used to be able to go to another window by clicking on a subject in the search engine

Whether I was in the standard Firefox search window, or Google, or DuckDuckGo (my preferred choice), I was able to click on a specific topic in the search window and have it automatically open a new window within the Firefox window settings. I can no longer do this with Firefox 100.

Please fix!

As cor-el mentioned, the first step is to set your search engine to target result links to a new window.

For Google:

https://www.google.com/preferences

Where results open Open each selected result in a new browser window

For DuckDuckGo:

https://duckduckgo.com/settings

Open Links in a New Tab Opens results in new windows/tabs

Note that these preferences/settings are stored in a cookie and if you use private windows or clear cookies often, most likely you will need to set them again in the future.

For Google you do this via the Google Search Settings page (open results in a new tab; Firefox would divert the new window to a new tab). I assume that DDG has a similar setting for where to show the search results. Otherwise you can always hold the Ctrl key or middle-click a result (link) to open the page in a new tab/window.

Related prefs on the about:config page you can look at: Normal Links:

  • browser.link.open_newwindow
    1:current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;

JavaScript Links:

  • browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction
    0:divert always; 1:divert never; 2:divert no features
