I have a huge string of tabs at the very top of the home browser page which is unnecessary and slows loading of the site. Any suggestions on eliminating it?

Hi tomcummins, Do you have "Open previous windows and tabs" selected? Menu -> Settings -> General -> Startup (at the very top)

Or, an extension/add-on to manage your tabs?

Or, multiple pages set for your Homepage? Menu -> Settings -> Home -> New Windows and Tabs (you can set multiple pages using the "pipe" between them)

Do you mean the Bookmarks Toolbar as this toolbar has three setting choices: Always, Never, only on the Firefox Home page (about:newtab and about:home)?
