Firefox background apps 23-30

more options

Firefox is running 23-30 apps in the background and consuming about 30% of CPU simply when it is open. Is this legit or is something else going on? Reduce number of apps running in the background so that less CPU bandwidth is utilized.

It is quite normal to see more Firefox processes running.

  • process for the main Firefox thread (user interface)
  • one or more content processes
    you see more content processes when Fission is enabled
  • process for the compositor thread
  • process for extensions
  • process for WebRender when this feature is enabled

There are several toolkit.aboutProcesses prefs on the about:config page to show more info. You can find the current multi-process state on the Troubleshooting Information page (about:support).

  • "Help -> Troubleshooting Information"
    "Application Basics":<be>Multiprocess Windows and Fission Windows
    "Remote Processes" (Web Content)

You can check the about:memory and about:processes pages for info about all processes. See also the about:unloads page for info about the tabs.

Thanks for the response. What I would like to know is how to disable some of these apps. At the moment I have 27 apps running consuming upto 70% of my CPU capacity and 70% of Memory. I have a lot of RAM. I simply have Firefox open! If I am on video conferencing, that creates a problem.

It's possible that Firefox is legitimately running multiple apps in the background, especially if you have a lot of tabs open or are using add-ons that require additional resources. However, it's also possible that there is something else going on, such as a bug or malware. To troubleshoot the issue, you can try reducing the number of apps running in the background by closing tabs or disabling add-ons. If that doesn't help, you can try scanning your computer for malware using antivirus software. Additionally, you may want to check if there are any updates available for Firefox, as they may include bug fixes that could help resolve the issue.
