How do I stop Firefox from initiating a download before I change the file name or find a directory to send the download to?

When I want to download something from the Internet, Firefox immediately begins the download either before I am allowed to chose the destination file or just after. I have little time or control to direct the download. This just started happening after an update. How can I change this?

OSX: Firefox > Preferences > General, Downloads section, choose "Always ask me where to save files". See: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Options+window+-+General+panel
