I have not been able to see any recent history on the internet lately. I used to be able to check it all the time but now it is all history from at least a month ago and is not being updated. Also, under the "tools" bar, the clear recent history icon and the stop private browsing are grey instead of black and i can not click on them.

You probably have Automatically start Firefox in a Private Browsing session selected in the Privacy tab in Options. That will cause those Tools menu items to be greyed-out. And when using that Option the (Private Browsing) line doesn't show in the Titlebar. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Private+Browsing

....and it's not because of the "Automatically start Firefox in a Private Browsing session" is selected.
