How can I merge search plugins from other installations?

I backed them up using febe, but when trying to restore them I was informed that I'd be overwriting the existing plugins, which isn't my intention. So I'd like to find a way.

You can make a backup copy of files in the searchplugins directory in your Firefox Profile Folder (not searchplugins in the Firefox program folder)

Then you can copy the files back after you have restored the search plugins via FEBE

In that case, would it work to simply copy the plugins to that directory and not use febe?

Sure, you can copy the files from one profile to the other profiles.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

FEBE backups are ZIP archives, so you can also use an archive manager to extract the files if necessary.
