My new tabs used to show the sites I had recently/frequently been viewing. Now they are blank. I would like to restore the type tabs that show the sites. How do I do this?

I don't want the tab to open into a webpage, I want it to display the small icons and lists of the last 9 or so websites I have visited. This used to happen...now it doesn't. The new tab is totally blank.
