Firefox crashes by opening huge numers of tabs when I click on certain email addresses

Sometimes when I'm on a website and I click on an email address, with the intent of sending an email to that recipient in gmail, a huge number of tabs show up and Firefox freezes up. It doesn't happen as much these days, as I've mostly stopped clicking on email addresses and write them down instead. But I forgot today and the same thing happened. The only way to get out is to force quit. Is there a fix?

Check the Mailto application in Firefox > Preferences > Applications
Make sure that it isn't set to the Firefox application.
