In Firefox version 3.6+ the lock icon is in the Status Bar at the bottom of the Firefox window when you are on a secure site. You should become familiar with the Site Identity Button (see below) as the Status Bar will no longer exist in Firefox 4.

The newer method of site security information is the Site Identity Button at the left end of the URL/Location/Address Bar; it changes color based on the "security level." See these articles:

Hi, Thanks for your help - unfortunately the padlock icon doesnt appear at all anywhere on my Firefox page - in addition until recently when I accessed a secure site I also got the https/: (as opposed to hhtp:/) in the URL box which is also an indication of a secure site - in the URL box there is now no mention of either https:/ or http:/ - I have also uninstalled and then re installed the Mozilla Firefox software but without any change/ Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
