Press F6 to mark the address, but on version 4 it focus just the open tab due to the shift of the address-field into lower level. this nice shortcut do not mark anymore the address... is there a alternative shortcut-button now?

You can use Control+L to go to the address bar.

There is a bug report concerning the F6 key not working when tabs are on top.

I have Firefox 4 on 2 laptops, 1 started as Beta 4 upgraded all the way and a 2nd from the final release.

Both install use tabs on top and tool bars hidden.

The Beta version gives me a pop up box when using Ctrl+L but not with the final release.

Any suggestions?

You get the pop-up box if you press Ctrl+L if the location is hidden and not on one of the toolbars. The location bar is by default on the Navigation Toolbar. If that bar is hidden then right click a toolbar of go to Firefox > Options to make the Navigation Toolbar visible.
