I saw that the status bar had a close button on left hand corner. I clicked it & it vanished. But couldn't find the enable/menu in the View menu.

It is now called the add-on bar. Right-click on a toolbar then click on the "Add-on bar" entry.

You can also toggle displaying it by using the keyboard shortcut Control+/

The add-on bar replaced the status bar and is a bit different, for details see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/what-happened-status-bar
